Trusted Research Environment

EYE-CAN-AID

The Eye Cancer AI Database, a secure environment giving approved researchers access to comprehensive ocular oncology data, with patient privacy at its core.

EYE-CAN-AID — Eye Cancer Artificial Intelligence Digital Bioresource

EYE-CAN-AID (Eye Cancer Artificial Intelligence Database) is a secure Trusted Research Environment (TRE) developed by the group. It gives approved researchers around the world access to comprehensive ocular oncology data, while that data never leaves the safe setting, protected by strict anonymisation and GDPR compliance.

The environment brings together multiple data types drawn from the group’s long-running Ocular Oncology Biobank: histology whole-slide images, clinical imaging (fundoscopy and OCT), clinical records and genetic results, enabling data science and artificial intelligence to improve diagnosis and treatment.

3,299 Patients in the database
1,700+ Whole-slide images
5,000+ Clinical images
1,000+ Patients with genetic data

What researchers can access

Approved researchers get secure remote access from anywhere, with virtual desktops, GPU acceleration and a full analysis toolkit (Python, R, QuPath, ImageJ/FIJI, PyTorch and TensorFlow), backed by 24/7 monitoring.

Security & compliance

Patient privacy is central. The platform is ISO 27001 and ISO 9001 certified, Cyber Essentials Plus accredited, and compliant with the NHS Data Security & Protection Toolkit, with full anonymisation and GDPR compliance throughout.
