Ocular Adnexal Lymphoma
Lymphomas of the tissues surrounding the eye, a long-standing area of Liverpool research expertise led by Professor Coupland.
Ocular adnexal lymphoma (OAL) refers to lymphomas that develop in the tissues around the eye: the conjunctiva, eyelids, lacrimal gland and orbit. Most are non-Hodgkin B-cell lymphomas, and the majority are low-grade, but subtypes vary considerably in behaviour and treatment.
Diagnosis and classification
Accurate classification is critical, because the right diagnosis determines the right treatment. Professor Coupland has a particular research and diagnostic interest in ocular adnexal lymphoma, combining detailed histopathology with molecular techniques to characterise these tumours precisely.
Our research
The group investigates the pathology, genetics and clinical behaviour of ocular adnexal lymphomas, contributing to international understanding of how these tumours arise and how they can best be diagnosed and managed.
